In a tabla trance

Music lovers in Ahmedabad have been in a tabla trance over the last week as Rhythm Riders has presented concert upon concert in celebration of Guru Purnima and Pandit Divyang Vakil’s 30 years of teaching.  It has been an unforgettable week for all the visitors from places such as the US, Korea, Canada and all over India to be with Guruji for this special anniversary.   In the subsequent days following Guru Purnima, everyone was treated to incredible solos by students as young at 7 years to professional artists.

Rahul Shrimali’s pure Ajrada solo was a technical and artistic masterpiece, Nishant Mehta beautifully demonstrated Guruji’s compositions,  10 year Adit performed his first solo mistake-free, Michael Lukshis played some compositions that you won’t find Indian tabla players performing, Kaumil Shah put everyone in a meditative state with his consistent and calming teentaal, Sahil Patel had everyone engaged with his Punjab solo and 10.5 minute rela, Sejal Kukadia impressed all with her signature Dha TeTe, Brian showed off his balanced hands, Vinnie proved why his tabla performance is so appreciated, beginner student Shaurya aptly expressed the moods of his compositions, Anna’s enjoyment of tabla came through in her playing and smile, while Dhruv and Devam dazzled with their speed.

And we’re still not done!

One more night of fantastic performances to come, including a Jhaptaal solo by Loren and pure Delhi solo by Rushi.

The trance continues…

(Music/ Tabla) Guru Purnima 2008 – India

As we look forward to Rhythm Rider’s Guru Purnima celebration this year, where we will be celebrating Guruji’s 30th year of teaching, its time to look back on our Guru Purnima celebrations of the past.  Rhythm Rider’s Guru Purnima function is the largest music guru purnima celebration in Gujarat.  Everyone looks forward to the Guru Purnima function.   It is a chance for students of Rhythm Riders Music Institute (and the Taalim School of Indian Music in the US) to showcase their talent, an opportunity for the community to come together to celebrate music and tabla and of course, the time when we formally honor our Gurus and “dada-Gurus”.

Here is a look at some pictures of Guru Purnima held in 2008 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.  The program in 2008 included performances by 6 female tabla players, 5 foreigners (hailing from Korea, US and Canada) and a performance by Pandit Divyang Vakil newest tabla ensemble – Tabla Ecstasy.

NOVEMBER 1, 2008
ART TO WARM THE SOUL

As we’re blown about by the winds of a cooler November, accompanied by the chill of economically uncertain times, many of us might think we’re justified in cutting back our arts enjoyment. Bah, humbug! Instead, I suggest we “buy local and buy the arts,” especially when gift shopping for the upcoming holidays. You’ll thank yourself for the enduring pleasures — and so will the artists.

In October, my hands-down (and affordable) thrill was the drumming performance at Queen’s University by Indian tabla guru Pandit Divyang Vakil and his acolytes. In their lightning-paced playing and “talking” the score, these dedicated souls proved just how truly extraordinary humans can be.
